The group was founded in 1992 by Aguilar when she was asked by the manager of a New York City East Village Mexican restaurant, who had also once been the manager of Jerry Gonzalez and The Fort Apache Band, to put together a band to play at the restaurant. Hence StringBeans was formed, although "Beans" actually refers to the frijoles Aguilar consumed as a child growing up in San Francisco.
